Hempstead MBK Pints Program

The Hempstead MBK Pints Program, hosted at Prospect Elementary School, is an enriching and comprehensive initiative designed to support and enhance the educational and social development of young students. This program offers a variety of activities every Saturday, including:

Reading and Writing: Fostering literacy through engaging activities that develop strong oral language skills, alphabet knowledge, and comprehension. Fine and Gross Motor Skills Activities: Helping children improve their physical coordination and dexterity.

Arts and Crafts: Encouraging creativity and self-expression through hands-on projects. Financial Literacy: Teaching children the fundamentals of personal finance, such as counting money, saving, and basic economic concepts.

Reading Buddies: Special events where Boy Scout Troop #280 and the ABGS MS Law Club join students to support their reading and social skills development. Social Emotional Learning: Helping students develop emotional intelligence, resilience, and interpersonal skills.

Mentor Teachers: The Teacher Opportunity Corps (TOC) from SUNY Old Westbury School of Education brings diverse, empowered educators to guide and inspire students. In addition, the program includes collaborative efforts with Morrison Mentors for STEM enrichment, Adelphi LPP for social and emotional learning, art and design, and robotics. HHS student mentors also volunteer to support the program, making it a truly community-driven initiative.

What is the age range for students participating in the Hempstead MBK Pints Program?

The program is designed for elementary school students, primarily those in pre-school through 5th grade. However, specific activities may cater to different age groups within this range.

How does the program support students' literacy development?

The program includes dedicated reading and writing activities that focus on developing oral language skills, understanding the alphabet, and engaging with the meaning of words and stories. Reading Buddy special event days, with support from Boy Scout Troop #280 and the ABGS MS Law Club, further enhance literacy by providing one-on-one reading support.

What types of financial literacy activities are included in the program?

Financial literacy activities teach children the basics of personal finance, such as counting money, saving in piggy banks, and playing store. These activities aim to instill foundational economic concepts at an early age, with special programming events provided by Chase Bank.

How are social and emotional skills addressed in the program?

Social and emotional learning is integrated through activities that help students develop emotional intelligence, resilience, and positive interpersonal skills. Partnerships with Adelphi LPP and Cultivating Lives bring specialized events and activities to support this aspect of development.

Who are the mentors, and what role do they play in the program?

Mentors include students from HHS, members of the Teacher Opportunity Corps (TOC) from SUNY Old Westbury, and volunteers from Boy Scout Troop #280 and the ABGS MS Law Club. They provide guidance, support, and inspiration, assisting with various activities and helping students build confidence and skills across different areas of learning.
